The hype is real surrounding Jordan Peele’s sophomore film. Us does not disappoint with it’s unnerving imagery and cryptic atmosphere. I got old school vibes watching this. Shades of The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone. Ominous is how I would describe the opening sequence. Us is one of the most creative and strange films I’ve seen in a long time. This is definitely worth experiencing at the cinema.
Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex take on the roles of the Tyler family. The four embark on a family vacation only to be terrorized by mirror images of themselves. First off, the soundtrack is magnificent! It plays such an integral part to the story as well. This movie is so layered and requires more than one viewing. It appears to be a home invasion on the surface but there are a lot of moving pieces at play.
Visually, it is stunning. Color is used as a character itself and every item you see on screen is symbolic to the plot in one way or another. Although this is a horror movie to the core, there are moments of humor that work very well. I like that the family isn’t the typical naive victims in need of rescuing. Each of them are capable in their own right. I was very happy walking out of the theater and can’t wait to see it again. Us is a masterpiece that leaves a lot to be explored. I give it a 8.5 out of 10.
