I have to say this is one of the worst vampire movies I’ve ever seen. I know it came out in the late 90s but damn. The protagonists were one dimensional middle aged men with no clear motivation. Sure evil bloodsuckers are bad but you have to have a reason to hunt them. I’m certainly not putting my neck on the line for a big payday. Jack Crow (James Woods) is a hot head vampire slayer with no respect for the Catholic Church.
In the film he sought out vampire dens and destroyed them. Until he found himself face to face with an exceptionally powerful master vampire, Jan Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith). He wasn’t a memorable villain as he had little to no lines of dialogue. The most interesting thing about Valek is his backstory, particularly how he came to be. Outside his ridiculous makeup, there’s nothing that makes him special.
One of the redeeming qualities about the film is how ruthless the vampires are. Many of them don’t even kill to feed, rather for the sake of brutality. In that regard the creatures of the night are truly terrifying beings. Out of all the vampire flicks out there, this is the last one on my list to watch. Felt more like parody than a serious attempt to add anything meaningful to the genre. John Carpenter’s Vampires earned a 4.5 out of 10.
