I didn’t have high expectations going into this. Most movies based on a video game suck! Rampage was no different. There was too much going on with the story and the length of the film was unnecessary. I found myself falling asleep and looking at the time. The tone was inconsistent. One minute it’s dramatic and serious, then it’s really campy. I’m glad I didn’t have to pay to see this.
The lead roles are played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Naomie Harris. Davis (The Rock) is a primatologist and Dr. Caldwell (Naomie) is a geneticist. Together they must team up to stop three giant monsters from destroying Chicago. Sounds simple right? Not so much. There are a lot of layers to this lasagna. So let’s start with the dialogue, which is full of cheese. It was worse than Schwarzenegger one-liners from the 90s.
Visually it could have used more time in the oven. The CG was a bit comical at times. Needless to say the sauce was bland. Now the meat of it all was the action. Lots of violence and destruction. Wish it was more centered on that. As well as the monsters eating tons of people, which is what the game was all about. I have a big problem with human beings carrying the narrative of movies where giants collide. Especially when the protagonist is nearly indestructible. With that said Rampage gets a 4.5 out of 10.
