Last night I went to see Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, formerly titled Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Changing the name was probably the best thing they could have done. There were maybe two dozen people in the auditorium. A disappointing sight to behold. Why? Because the film was pretty entertaining.
Listen, it wasn’t Shakespeare or an Oscar worthy performance. It was a nice popcorn flick. One filled with humor, extreme violence, and highly stylized visuals. The cinematography is akin to a Lady Gaga music video. Not a big fan of the editing choices or how certain characters from the comics were treated. There were scenes where the tone felt like they belonged in an entirely different film.
The story was lacking in many aspects. I didn’t care about the fate of the characters. None of them are given dimension beyond caricatures of their comic book counterparts. One of the best qualities that BOP possesses is the fight choreography. Not only was it realistic and gritty, it was insane! The ladies took as much punishment as they dished out. However, it wasn’t enough to carry the narrative. I give it a 6.5 out of 10.
