I have never seen a film like this! Get Out, written and directed by Jordan Peele is a masterpiece. A comedy, horror, and mystery all wrapped in one. It’s the first time I’ve seen all of those genres woven together in an organic way. Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) are an interracial couple. Rose takes him to meet her family for the first time and things go seriously awry.
Our main character, Chris is put in awkward positions throughout the entire first half of the film. Such as being asked to speak on behalf of his entire community in predominantly White spaces. There are tons of symbolism sprinkled throughout the narrative. One of them being that Chris is a photographer who only shoots in black & white. A depiction of the way we see things and an omen of things to come.
Another is the tapping of the spoon. Once you see the film, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. It’s a clear statement that the most subtle forms of racism can have a devastating effect on a person. I would be wrong not to mention the amazing sound design. It’s so damn creepy! The imagery in this film is disturbing. Some of them are like characters themselves. I’d say it is as much a psychological thriller than a horror flick.
Satire and social commentary aside, this movie is scary as hell. The suspense will have you clenching your seat. All the jokes are well executed and placed in moments of extreme tension. You will find yourself laughing nervously at times when no one else is. That is because there are so many layers to the narrative. Many that some can and can not relate to. Get Out is one of my top films of the year and gets a 9/10.
