Detroit (2017)

This movie is not for the faint of heart. It took a while for me to review this because the content is so heavy. Detroit is the movie all Americans should see! An eye opener for the uninformed masses. There are a lot of elements in the film that reflects the current climate of race relations in the U.S. It highlights the adversity Black people face with law enforcement and how the system continues to fail them.

You can expect a lot of social commentary and violence against people of color by White police. The movie is shot in a format that’s right in your face. It puts the viewer in the situation itself, making you feel like a witness in the scene. John Boyega and Will Poulter are definitely standout performances. The rest of the cast was amazing too. Everyone gets their time to shine in the film which made it feel less crowded.

The incorporation of real footage from the incident gives Detroit an authentic feel. The sound is done so well and is atmospheric of a war zone. I was impressed with the story, but it didn’t make it any easier to digest. It was a terrible time in which terrible things happened. The movie drags on towards the end and it’s annoying. You definitely want to watch a comedy or some cartoons after this. Detroit gets a score of 8.5 out of 10.
