Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) Review

I’ve been a fan of this franchise since it came out. I myself have always been a werewolf guy. Vampires are cool but they suck. Underworld: Blood Wars is a fun movie! Sure the narrative lacks in dimension but what do you expect from this type of genre in 2017? Vampires and werewolves fighting for survival in one last showdown. It’s a comic book come to life. Not something I’d pick for a movie date though.

There is a lot of violence in this film. Yes it’s Rated-R and boy do they milk it. I haven’t seen a movie this bloody since Evil Dead. The movie stars Kate Beckinsale as Selene, a warrior vampire seeking peace from the war between the two species. However she has something both sides want, pure blood. Apparently if you drink pure vampire blood, you get their strength and all their memories.

If you were a fan of Blade or any other films of that mold, you’re gonna love Underworld. The only complaint I have is that the creatures, vampires and werewolf alike, have an extreme tolerance for body mutilation. I get they are supernatural beings but there has to be a limit. Every time a person gets shot or butchered you kind of don’t care. Because most likely they’ll pop back up. Only exception is a throat rip or decapitation. In other words, it’s like watching a video game.

As I said before, not a date movie but definitely a Sunday afternoon chill flick. I enjoyed it for what it was. The cinematography was pretty gloomy and dark. Not a lot of set pieces or scenery, just a good ole action flick made for fifty cents. If you want to kill some time while doing laundry this is perfect for that. Underworld: Blood Wars gets a 6.5 out of 10.
