Another SaW movie came out! These things keep coming like The Terminator. The franchise is definitely on shaky legs as it fails to reinvent itself in the eighth installment titled Jigsaw. Tobin Bell returns with his creepy raspy voice. Other than that, it’s an all new cast. As a die hard fan of the series I wasn’t impressed by this film.
The concept was there, the execution was not. Star Wars is one of the few movie franchises that can create prequel stories to their existing mythology. SaW tried to do this and failed. All the history and origins setup in past films become convoluted because of it. There’s some redeeming qualities about it, but more so towards the end.
There’s a lot to be said about the success of the first SaW movie from 2004. It was simple story, limited sets, a handful of characters, and a great reveal. This one turns out to be pretty predictable. As a viewer you don’t feel hopeful that anyone will survive. So you’re basically watching gruesome body horror on-screen for an hour and a half. It’s not a terrible movie, just not a great one. I give it a 6 out of 10.
