Hustlers (2019) Review

I was opposed to seeing this film at first. The marketing made it seem like a high concept music video. I couldn’t have been more wrong! This is a classic case of don’t judge a book by it’s cover. The ladies in this movie are more than just eye candy. All of them take on original characters that are comical, ruthless, calculating, and even cowardly.

Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, and Lili Reinhart makeup the main cast. However, there is a ton of talent present as ancillary characters. I think it’s pretty obvious that all the women in this movie are fine as hell. The R-rating was used to full effect. J-Lo gave an exemplary performance. Constance played off her very well, providing empathy and reason among the group of women.

Hustlers is about strippers seeking revenge on wealthy businessmen. You get an in-depth look at the life of each dancer. Director Lorene Scafaria does an exceptional job balancing screen time and exploring the motivations of “the crew.” Sure the ladies are in the game to make money, but there’s more to it than that. You should definitely go see it in theaters. It felt like a documentary as well as a period piece. I give it a solid 7 out of 10.
