Disney had the best direct to television movies in the 90s. Halloweentown was a hit during the holiday, especially during it’s release. A movie full of traditional monsters presented in a lighthearted manner. The monsters were whimsical, colorful, and goofy.
Marnie, an overoptimistic teenager, discovers she is a witch on Halloween. Her grandmother, Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) enlists her help in combating dark forces that threaten both the human and magical world. It’s a feel-good story suitable for young children. Viewer discretion advised.
A few of the monsters are scary. The villain looks like something from a Wes Craven movie. It’s certainly not one you have to pay close attention to. Some adults may find themselves yawning as it is full of cheesy jokes and teenage tropes. Halloweentown gets a 5.5 out of 10.
