Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) Review

The Ghostbusters franchise is one I hold in high regard. A ritual of my childhood revolved around viewing VHS tapes on repeat and stalking the TV guide for upcoming programs. To this day, I can’t tell you how many times I have seen the first two. Rumors of a third movie with the original cast floated around for over thirty years. I’m happy to say this one is an incontrovertible win. Anyone who wants to challenge me on this will be haunted by Slimer for all eternity.

When people knock on my door to tell me about Jesus

This is a legacy film centered on family and extremely poor communication skills. A single mom (Carrie Coon) in debt moved her two kids to an infertile farm. Left unattended the kids stumbled across technology used to hunt specters. I loved almost everything about it. Paul Rudd was charming, Mckenna Grace won my heart, and Logan Kim stole the show. The movie expanded the lore from the first GB and modernized it for new viewers.

I’m happy Jason Reitman took his time on the script. You can tell a lot of care and effort was put into the story. Despite the supernatural theme, the world closely resembled our own. In Ghostbusters II, after the invasion, the team became irrelevant. That plot point was explored further. Meanwhile, an extinction level event threatened to destroy the entire world. This movie is must-see. Ghostbusters: Afterlife gets an 8.5 out of 10.
