The Accountant (2016) Review

Ben Affleck is taking over Hollywood yo!!! This guy is an actor, producer, and writer. Not only did he kill it in The Accountant (no pun intended) but also in Batman vs Superman. Warner Bros. is so high off this guy he will be writing and starring in the stand-alone film titled The Batman. I’m looking forward to his other projects. Now let’s get to our review. I was impressed with how in-depth this film was when it came to the sensitive topic of autism. It was directed by Gavin O’Connor who directed the dope ass film Warrior (2011). The writers and producers must have really done their homework.

Ben Affleck plays the main character Christian Wolff who has a functioning form of autism. Basically he’s a math savant that is also a forensic accountant. This is portrayed consistently throughout the film. Christian is a big deal. The guy does in one day what it would take a team of five men to accomplish. From what I saw in the promotion, it seemed like Christian is a hit man. I’ll leave that up to you to find out when you watch it. Why? Because I highly recommend it. Go out right now and see this film whenever and however possible. This thing is action packed, balls to the wall, adrenaline filled storytelling.

A lot of people were murdered in this movie. In addition we have a financial scandal mystery taking place from the second act into the third. My guy, Jon Bernthal makes an appearance in the movie. He is a badass in his own right. If you have not seen season 2 of Daredevil on Netflix, you should be ashamed. Anyways, the cinematography is on point. We learn about Christian’s upbringing as well as how he got his “skills” to be such an intimidating accountant. While on a job for a large corporation, Christian falls for a socially awkward lady, Danna Cummings played by Anna Kendrick.

This is where I got upset. The women in this movie are given little to no character development. Not only is Anna Kendrick’s character your typical damsel in distress but we’re given no reason to care about her. Our other supporting actress, Cynthia Addai-Robinson plays Marybeth Medina. She is a data analyst for the Treasury Department who is blackmailed into investigating Christian. Medina has all these contacts and skills like a 007 agent but we never find out how she came into this power. Also how does a person this well equipped get blackmailed?

Other than that this movie is off the chain! It’s well written and gritty. Something a lot of action movies have been missing in the past few years. There is no cheesy one liners or slow motion here. Ben Affleck gives a solid performance that is very believable. At the end of the day he’s just a person who wants to belong. However, if you cross him he will kill you by kicking you in the head. I’m serious about that. If I had to rate this movie based on its level of awesomeness I would give it a 8.5 out of 10. In addition this will go on my top 10 list for 2016.
