X-MEN Apocalypse (2016) Review

If you didn’t know, I’m a big fan of comic books. X-MEN played a major role in my upbringing. It was one of my favorite cartoons to watch in the 90’s. When I heard this film was coming out I lost my mind. Everyday I’d search the Internet for information about how the big baddie, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) would look. I have to say I was a little disappointed. I’m one of those sticklers for the non-existent rules of book adaptations. The whole time I was watching this movie I was like,”That didn’t happen in the animated series!” Despite my discontent X-MEN Apocalypse was an entertaining piece of art.

This movie is about a group of mutants (people born with extraordinary abilities) fighting their ancestor, the first mutant, Apocalypse who is a tyrant. He’s also a genocidal racist who wants to kill regular human beings. That’s right he’s Hitler with super powers. He is opposed by Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and a whole bunch of other people. The visuals were stunning in their own right. Lighting and use of color highlighted the design of the characters costumes. Some looked like they walked right out of the comic book pages.

As a frequent viewer of comic book franchise films I was confused. So I know the casual movie goer was like WTF is going on here?! Certain key characters are bland as hell. While others are impressive (Quicksilver and Psylocke) they lack motivation for their actions. One guy who is a holocaust survivor actually joins Apocalypse in his conquest for world domination. Now that I’m done ragging the dumb plot holes. On to the positive.

The action sequences were amazing! As in every blockbuster you had a swirling mass of trash in the sky, global destruction, slow motion, and comedic moments. If you’re a little kid or just a fan of the genre you will have fun watching this. Loads of fan service and surprisingly intense scenes of dramatic flair. After 15 years, I finally got to see Storm with a Mohawk on-screen. If you wanna feel nostalgic like me or see God-like beings lay waste to our planet, X-MEN Apocalypse is the movie for you. For a score I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
